Income protection insurance

Income protection insurance pays up to 75% of your regular income to you in case you cannot work as a result of sickness or injury. It is relevant to  anyone who is working regardless of whether you are a home owner or living in rented accommodation. It is very important for self employed people and for those who are employed and have very little or no sick pay. It can help them to pay their bills so that they don’t end up in financial mess.

Payment starts after deferred period which is set out in the policy and can start from day one and can be be up to 24 months. The deferred period is the duration between sickness /injury and when payment starts. One can set out the deferred period in the policy depending on your situation e.g. if someone is self employed he could start cover from the day one, on the other hand an employee can get 3 months sick pay from employer, so can set deferred period to 3 months. It is important to note that your Income Protection Policy payment cannot be started until your sick pay period ends.

The amount of money paid and the duration of the payment during sickness/injury depends on  the type of cover  you have .You can get a cover which can pay up to the date of retirement or end of the cover.
